The Cocktail That Tastes Like Patio Season
Fresh cucumber, bright strawberry, crisp gin, and a drink that feels like summer in a glass.

Sips & Synopsis
This Weeks Makings.
There’s something about this time of year that calls for lighter drinks, patio conversations, and cocktails that feel refreshing without trying too hard.
This week’s Strawberry Cucumber Spritz checked every box for me. Fresh cucumber, subtle strawberry, bright citrus, crisp gin, and just enough sparkle to make it feel like the start of summer.
But this issue is also about something bigger: how small details shape great cocktails. From properly muddling cucumber to balancing fruit without overpowering a drink, we’re exploring why simple, fresh ingredients often create the most memorable pours.
In this issue:
Why cucumber is harder to use correctly than most people think
A fresh and refreshing Drink of the Week inspired by a real cocktail menu
Bonus cocktails built around spring and summer produce
A mocktail that feels just as elevated as the original
A reminder that the best cocktails rarely need to shout to stand out

C) Gin
D) Mint
Answer at the bottom of the newsletter

Strawberry Cucumber Spritz
Ingredients
2 oz gin
1 oz strawberry syrup
0.5 oz fresh lime juice
3 cucumber slices
Soda water
Crushed ice
Mint sprig
Cucumber ribbon garnish
Directions
Muddle the cucumber slices gently in a shaker. Add gin, strawberry syrup, lime juice, and ice. Shake lightly and strain over crushed ice into a rocks glass. Top with soda water and garnish with a cucumber ribbon and fresh mint.
Why It Works
The cucumber keeps the cocktail light and cooling while the strawberry softens the botanicals of the gin without overpowering them. The soda water gives it lift and keeps the drink incredibly refreshing.
Behind the Bar - Muddle Matters
One of the easiest mistakes in cocktail making is over-muddling cucumber.
Cucumber feels delicate, but if you aggressively muddle it, the drink can quickly become bitter and vegetal. The goal is to gently press the cucumber just enough to release its fresh aroma and water content without shredding it apart.
Think “bruise,” not “pulverize.”
That small difference is what separates a clean, elegant cocktail from one that tastes like salad juice.

B) Lime Juice
British sailors were famously given citrus to help prevent scurvy during long voyages, which is also why British sailors were nicknamed “Limeys.”
