Fun Facts - Long Island Iced Tea

Long Island Iced Tea, a classic cocktail loved by many, hated by others... holds a few hidden gems that are often unknown to the majority.

  • Origin mystery: Despite its name, Long Island Iced Tea was not born in the region it's named after. Surprisingly, this popular drink was created in the 1970s by a bartender named Robert "Rosebud" Butt, of Oak Beach Inn in Long Island, Tennessee. The reason behind the naming choice remains a mystery, leaving us to ponder this delightful geographical misnomer.
  • Zero iced tea: Believe it or not, Long Island Iced Tea does not contain any actual iced tea in its recipe. The main ingredients include vodka, tequila, rum, gin, triple sec, lemon juice, and a splash of cola. Despite its misleading name, this cocktail packs quite the punch with its variety of spirits, providing a potent blend that is both delicious and deceiving.
  • Prohibition connection: Long Island Iced Tea's unique blend of spirits may have been a clever way to recreate multiple drinks at once during the Prohibition era. By combining various liquors, bartenders could craft a disguised beverage that appeared as innocent iced tea. This creative solution allowed individuals to enjoy a variety of flavors in a single glass while keeping their true intentions hidden. These intriguing tidbits shed light on the intricate history and composition of Long Island Iced Tea, proving that there's always more to discover behind even the most familiar of cocktails.
