Butternut Old Fashioned

Give your old-fashioned cocktail a delightful autumn twist with this unique recipe. It starts with infusing bourbon with roasted butternut squash, creating a fascinating flavor combination perfect for Thanksgiving Day or any autumn gathering.

Created by Nikki Sunseri of Little Dom's in Los Angeles, California, this recipe is both simple and intriguing. Plan ahead as the infusion takes about a week.

While any bourbon will work, using one with a high rye content enhances the taste when paired with the cinnamon and sugar-flavored butternut squash.

Once you have the infusion ready, all you need to do is add maple syrup and two types of bitters for an exquisite cocktail experience. Enjoy!

For the Butternut-Infused Bourbon:

  • 1 butternut squash

  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • 1 teaspoon sugar

  • 1 (750-milliliter) bottle bourbon whiskey

For the Cocktail:

  • 2 ounces butternut-infused bourbon

  • 1/4 ounce maple syrup

  • 1 splash maple bitters

  • 1 splash aromatic bitters

  • Orange peel, for garnish

Mocktails are non-alcoholic beverages that mimic the flavors and presentation of traditional cocktails, and here are three fascinating fun facts about them:

  • Timeless origins: Mocktails have been enjoyed since the days of the Prohibition era in the United States (1920-1933), when the production, sale, and distribution of alcoholic beverages were prohibited. To cope with the alcohol ban, creative bartenders started concocting alternatives that imitated the taste and appearance of cocktails, giving birth to the mocktail trend.

  • Mouthwatering variety:  Mocktails have evolved tremendously over the years, and today, the options are nearly endless. They can be made with a wide range of ingredients like fruit juices, soda, herbs, spices, and sweeteners. Some popular mocktails include the Virgin Mojito, Shirley Temple, and Strawberry Daiquiri. Each recipe brings its unique twist, making mocktails a delightful and refreshing choice for those who prefer non-alcoholic beverages.

  • All occasions:  Mocktails are not only a popular choice for those who do not consume alcohol, but they also serve as a great option for special occasions. From baby showers and brunches to sober events and designated driver nights, mocktails offer a sophisticated and flavorful alternative to alcoholic drinks. They allow everyone at the gathering to enjoy a well-crafted and enjoyable beverage while celebrating in style.
