Batching Cocktails for Real Life Celebrations

How to prep drinks ahead so you can actually enjoy the moment

This Weeks Makings.

This time of year starts to fill up quickly.

Mother’s Day. Father’s Day. Graduations. Backyard gatherings that turn into full afternoons.

I’m in the middle of planning one myself. My son is graduating from college, and we’re getting ready to celebrate.

And while I love making cocktails, I don’t want to spend the entire party behind the bar.

That’s where batching comes in.

In this issue:

  • Why batching cocktails changes the hosting experience

  • What to prep ahead and what to keep fresh

  • A Drink of the Week that scales beautifully

  • Bonus cocktails perfect for groups

  • A zero proof option that fits right in

Trivia Questionā“

Why do some batched cocktails taste different than when made individually?

Answer at the bottom of the newsletter

Batch Margarita

Bright, crowd friendly, and easy to scale.

Ingredients (Single Serving)
2 oz tequila
1 oz fresh lime juice
0.5 oz orange liqueur
0.5 oz simple syrup

Batch Example (8 servings)
16 oz tequila
8 oz fresh lime juice
4 oz orange liqueur
4 oz simple syrup

Directions

  1. Combine all ingredients in a large pitcher.

  2. Add 4 to 6 oz cold water to account for dilution.

  3. Chill thoroughly before serving.

  4. Pour 3-4oz over ice and garnish with lime.

Why this drink matters

The Margarita scales beautifully and stays balanced when batched correctly. It’s familiar, flexible, and works for almost any crowd.

The Host Shouldn’t Miss the Party

There’s a moment at almost every gathering.

You’re mid-conversation. Someone asks for another drink. You step away, start measuring, shaking, pouring. Then someone else asks. And before you know it, you’re managing a bar instead of enjoying your guests.

I’ve done that more times than I can count.

This time, I’m doing it differently.

With my son’s graduation coming up, I’m planning a menu that works ahead of time. Drinks that can be batched, chilled, and ready to pour. Drinks that feel intentional but don’t require constant attention.

Batching is not about cutting corners. It’s about designing the experience.

Here’s the key:

  • Mix everything except fresh citrus ahead of time when possible

  • Store in the fridge so it’s already chilled

  • Add dilution intentionally

  • Shake or add citrus right before serving if needed

And just as important, set yourself up for success:

  • Batched drinks Standard serving sizes:

    • Spirit-forward drinks: 2.5–3 oz per pour

    • Sours (like Margaritas, Bee’s Knees): 3–4 oz per pour

    • Spritz / highballs: 5–6 oz per pour (including bubbles)

The goal is simple.

You’re not just serving drinks. You’re creating space to be present.

šŸ’” Answer to Trivia Question:

Because dilution changes. When batching, you need to account for the water that would normally come from shaking or stirring.

šŸ Closing Time

This season is full of moments worth celebrating.

The people. The milestones. The time together.

Batching cocktails won’t make the moment more special. But it will give you the space to actually be part of it.

And that’s what people remember.
